On looking through my collection of anthologies and other books that were published during Siegfried Sassoon’s lifetime (all featured on this web site) and which contain examples of his poems, I have managed to create the following table below.
The table shows which poems were published and how many times during the period approximately 1917 to 1966. A total of 53 books were examined (including about half a dozen magazines). I know that there may be many other books as yet unseen that also include poems, but 52 is a good start in order to deduce what were considered to be Sassoon’s most popular poems. The list will be updated as other titles are discovered.
I have not included any books published by Sassoon himself, in order to avoid any favouritism on the part of the author! Any poems with four or more appearances are highlighted in Green, the top slot (a poem which should surprise no one) is highlighted in pink.
Incidentally, my favourite, ‘The Death-Bed,’ has been knocked down to joint third with seven by ‘Base Details,’ where is yours?
