A Biography

Siegfried Sassoon DiariesIn 2010 I obtained the set of Siegfried Sassoon Diaries left, edited by Rupert Hart-Davis and published by Faber and Faber. The 1923-1925 edition has a wonderful description of a road trip Sassoon took in his car in 1924 taking him through Norfolk. Among the places he visited were Wisbech, Kings Lynn, Wells, Cley, Sheringham, Cromer, Edingthorpe, North Walsham and Norwich.

Thus inspired, I set out on a similar tour, visiting Sheringham, Cromer and Holt where I found a number of bookshops and bought the eight books below containing contributions by Sassoon to add to the web site.

Mortonhall Golf Club was located close to Craiglockhart Mortonhall 220Hospital in Edinburgh, and during Siegfried Sassoon’s time at the hospital in

1917, this is where he played golf along with two other war poets, Robert Graves and Wilfred Owen. The book above was published in 1992 by the Scottish Academic Press.

Siegfried Sassoon: Poets Pilgrimage 1973Siegfried Sassoon: Poets Pilgrimage by Dame Felicitas Corrigan, published in 1973 bySiegfried Sassoon: Poets Pilgrimage Book Inscription Gollancz. The book is signed by the author (right). D. Felicitas Corrigan was a nun at Stanbrook Abbey and this book charts Sassoon’s journey towards his spiritual side in which the nuns at the abbey assisted.

The book charts this transition through his poems and letters and is practically another anthology.

Not About Heroes Programme 220Not About Heroes A play by Stephen Macdonald, about the short relationship between Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, first performed in 1982. This programme is from a performance at the Key Theatre, Peterborough, in 2014.

Siegfried Sassoon: Scorched Glory - A Critical Study -

Letter from Paul Moeyes

Scorched Glory Page 1

Letter to Paul Moeyes

Siegfried Sassoon: Scorched Glory - A Critical Study - By Paul Moeyes, published in April 1993, by Paul Moeyes. This book is a soft back presentation copy of Paul Moeyes’ doctoral thesis which he sent to Siegfried Sassoon’s son, George Sassoon in January 1994. Moeyes had not yet managed to find a publisher for this work and was asking George for advice on the cost of quoting copyright material and also for his opinion of the book.

The book would eventually be published by Macmillan in 1997. The second picture above is the accompanying letter Paul Moeyes sent to George with the book. The third picture above is the first page of the book on which George has made several notes, and the fourth picture shows the subsequent letter (there are two pages) which George sent back to Paul Moeyes. These are fascinating documents relating to Siegfried Sassoon, and I hope to record the contents of these letters on this web site in the near future.
